The Thorntons story goes back to 1911 when Joseph William Thornton opened a sweet shop in Sheffield with his son, Norman, with the simple aim of creating the finest sweet shop in town. Expansion quickly followed, and by 1939 there were 35 Thorntons shops across the Midlands & North of England. By 1988, Thorntons had become a plc and by 2010 Thorntons has 379 own stores, 37 of which have their own café, 250 franchise stores across the country, as well as a strong direct business, and a rapidly growing commercial business, which has lead to the Thorntons brand readily available across differing retail outlets across the UK. The result now is that more & more shops have access to some of the finest confectionery.
BOXED CHOCOLATES
The popularity of Thorntons across UK retail outlets has grown quickly, and within Boxed Chocolates Thorntons are now the No.1 manufacturer within Inlaid Assortments and the 3rd biggest branded manufacturer overall with 63% growth versus two years and annual sales of £72m*.
The growth and performance in Boxed Chocolates is being driven by its 2 core brands – Thorntons Classic Collection and Thorntons Premium Collection. Both brands sit in the top 3 Inlaid Assortment brands, and Classic Collection is the current No.1 brand.
The performance of these 2 brands is largely driven by the core skus which are now a must stock for any retailer wanting to make the most of Inlaid Assortments. Classic Collection 330g & Premium Collection 227g both retail under £7 and both are the ideal gift for chocolate lovers.
LOVE MILK COLLECTION

Thorntons first premium twist-wrapped chocolate brand Moments has proved a huge hit with UK chocolate lovers. A collection of delicious premium twistwrap chocolates in a 250g sharing carton. The Moments brand has grown in popularity since its launch in 2008 and is now worth more than £10m in the last year. **

Thorntons Melts was added to the range in early 2010. Appealing to shoppers looking for an ideal sharing or gift solution, Praline Melts is an indulgent chocolate product with a soft praline centre.

Thorntons are not just about boxes of chocolates, look out for iconic brands such as Special Toffee available in cartons & bags, a range of hanging bags such as Toffi Chocs and a range of impulse bars for the perfect indulgent self treat.
SEASONAL
Thorntons produce a wide range of products for the key seasons: For Christmas, Thorntons develop a range to suit all ages, from iconic highly decorated models & lollies to Special Toffee & Fudge branded gifts. The Valentine’s Day & Mother’s Day ranges have something to cover all price ranges including lollies, truffles, and specially developed boxes designed specifically for these occasions.
For Easter, Thorntons create iconic Easter Eggs focused around its key brands such as Classic Collection, Premium Collection, Moments, Melts and Special Toffee. On top of this, Novelty and Impulse lines play a major role in the range with lollies and filled eggs plus intricately decorated models.
